The use of low dimensional materials for solar energy to fuel conversion has been emerging very recently as a possible promising strategy. In this thesis, the possibility of solar energy to H2 fuel conversion via organic-inorganic hybrid nanostructured materials is investigated. The aim of this thesis is to unravel the properties of emerging low-dimensional materials, i.e. colloidal quantum dots and semiconducting carbon nanotubes as active components in sensitized solar cells and water splitting photoelectrodes. The exciton and free carrier dynamics in these hybrid systems in order to gain better understanding of the limiting factors of these materials and further improve the device performance are investigated.

The direct conversion of sunlight into fuels is a promising strategy to satisfy mankind’s demand for energy in a sustainable way. One way to do this is the light-driven water splitting reaction, which consists of two half reactions: water oxidation and proton reduction. Systems capable of performing these two half reactions photocatalytically are intensively studied. Bart van den Bosch deals with the development of systems capable of photo- and/or electrocatalytic proton reduction.

This thesis is concerned with the transfer of energy from light to matter. Over a century ago it was established that light consists of packets of energy , now known as photons. Not much later the energy levels of matter at the atomic scale were found to be discrete . These phenomena required a new physical description that has become the theory of quantum mechanics . Now, this theory of light and matter could contribute to tackling a fundamental socioeconomic and technological challenge: To find a sustainable supply of useful energy that is cheap, abundant and generated on-the-spot.
In silico study of reaction mechanisms and design principles for water oxidation catalysts

Throughout the last decades the water oxidation process has been extensively investigated. However, open questions remain on the reaction mechanism and the possible intermediates in the catalytic cycle. Indeed, different catalysts can function through different reaction routes. Some of them work in a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) pathway, while other catalysts have a non-PCET behaviour. Some of these problems lie in the very short lifetime of intermediates, which makes it difficult to characterize them experimentally. Within this context, DFT calculations represent a very useful tool. In fact quantum-mechanical computational tools allow exploring and analyzing the possible intermediates and study and compare different reaction pathways in order to find the energetically most likely one. In the same way the thermodynamics of the catalytic cycle and the kinetics of the reaction coordinates can be analyzed. The specific aim of this thesis is the study of different catalysts and reaction pathways to find clues about the mechanism of the reaction and develop guiding principles for the design of efficient water oxidation complexes.

To achieve this, a class of mono metal water splitting catalysts is introduced in this manuscript and exploitation of these complexes in homogeneous catalysis and in electrochemical studies with surface immobilized catalyst assemblies has been discussed. The catalysts are comprised of a single centre ruthenium or iridium metal core coordinated to a dinitrogen ligand and stabilized by a cyclic conjugated hydrocarbon. Homogeneous catalytic water oxidation is performed with a chemical oxidant as catalyst activator. For electro-assisted experiments, the catalyst complexes are functionalized with carboxylic or phosphonic acid linker units on the dinitrogen ligand that serve as anchoring sites for deposition on conducting oxide electrodes. The electrochemical water splitting systems with molecular catalysts have potential application in e.g. rooftop devices to make personalized energy carriers. The proposed “Artificial Leaf” will soon be the future outcome of the present day technology and efforts in this field. Cheap and easy accessible hydrogen will not only serve as fuel for transportation but also as driving force for green power generation.

They weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a tandem converter against other approaches, including biomass.
